Hung Gar Training and Grading Guide

Dear Students

This Section will cover the Warm Ups and training in each Sash Grade and Levels.  The Grading system was updated in January 2016, so to stream line the training further.

The Grading system of training on this page, will show you what Grade and level you are starting at and what grades and levels you need to achieve.  This training system requires you to train at least 3 x a week, at the hall or at home, to progress through the grading system of this Academy.  Some Private lessons are useful when you are doing the Forms.

Before we start on the Grading /training system, It is advisable that you do the 30 day Horse stance training.  In the Shaolin Temples, the Horse stance training is vital for a strong stance and stable mind.  This stance is practised by all Kung Fu systems, including Tai Chi, Ba gua, to Hung Gar and Coy Li Fut.  This stance is as much an internal as it is External stance to do. This stance is also part of the Chi Gong healing Art.

The Horse Stance for anchor power & focus training.  This is a short version to prepare you for the strength you need in the Hung Gar style, in 30 days:         The Horse Stance as mentioned is the foundation of all the Kung Fu arts of Shaolin.  It’s also an Internal exercise,  That is achieve through the following stages:

1.  Correct Posture  & Perseverance

2. Calm Mind & Quite place

3.  Deep Breathing, that is consistent and constant

4.  Focus on the Dan Tin, to centre and focus the Chi power within

5. When standing in the Horse stance, make sure you do the following:

  1.  Stand with Feet next to each other, toes point forward
  2. Spread your feet, by pivoting the feet in four moves, leading with the toes first
  3. Thighs are slightly higher than parallel to the floor,
  4. Knees don’t go past the big toes – (knees do not go in or out.)
  5. Grab the floor with your feet.  (Toes digging into ground)
  6. Drop Pelvis so it is level with the spine
  7. Body is upright with tummy tucked in a little
  8. Hold Fists in the middle of the waist, above hips
  9. Elbows point to the rear, inwardly, not to the sides
  10. Head is level – (Chin down)
  11. Eyes looking at the horizon or a spot in front
  12. Focus your Mind and Breath on the Dan Tin centre
  13. Draw the Positive and Negative charge into the Dan Tin, with each breath, Breath In, Pause, breath out to into the Dan Tin, then into your feet & ground

6. Once you position yourself and prepare your mind for this exercise,

Start counting your breath as you breath gently into your Dan Tin, a focal point that is about four fingers width under the belly button.   Let your breath in gently without force,

a. Breath in gently through your nose, Pause, breathe out of your nose or mouth,

b. Write down your breath count achievement in every session. (Its important!)

c. Consistent Horse stance practice with breathing, is essential for great results.

7. Practicing the Horse stance has Two other essential components:

1. Stance Turning:  Step and turn into Bow & Arrow stance, on both sides

2. Stance Footwork / Stepping technique, for leg Speed & Stability.

When Moving in the Horse stance, use the; 3 x steps forward and 1x step back.

Start with 20 sets and build to 50 – 100 sets, in each session.  (Record your progress!)

Starting the Horse stance meditative regime in this Academy:                    Initially, test yourself and find the base number you can start from, without stress or great pain.  Record the number of breaths you were able to do on that day, say 17 breaths.  Then the next day onwards begins your real program.  Start a journal as attached and record your breathing progress for the next 30 day period.  Every breath in & out should take between 10 seconds to 30 seconds.  Take it easy and stead as you progress to that number.

“Test day”-  You may acheive 15 breaths on your initial try.  15 -3 =12.  Start at 12 breaths

Example:                                                                                                                                            Your Test cycle may looks like this: Day 0 (Test Day) – You managed 15 breaths.

Week 1 cycle starts:

Day 1 – 12     breathes, that’s because 15 – 3 = 12

Day 2 – 12,   It’s the same as day 1

Day 3 – 14,   Increase by 2.  That makes it 12+2 = 14

Day 4 – 14,   same as day 3

Day 5 – 16,   Increase by 2.  That makes it 14+2 = 16

Day 6 – 16,   same as day 5

Day 7 – 18,  Increase by 2.  That makes it 16+2 = 18

Week 2 cycle starts, which is as follows:                                                                    Every New cycle, reduces the previous breath figure by 3 breaths

Day 8 – 15,   breathes, that’s 18 – 3 = 15

Day 9 – 15    same as day 8

Day 10 – 17,   15+2 = 17

Day 11 – 17,   same as day 10

Day 12 – 19,   17+2 = 19

Day 13 – 19   same as day 12

Day 14 – 21,  19+2 = 21

Week 3 cycle starts on Day 15.                                                                                                   So subtract 3 from 21 and continue accordingly. Day 15 is 18   (21-3 = 18)

The Follow table, will help you keep track of the whole 30 day program.  In this process, you will be increasing and decreasing your number of breaths as you go along every day, until the end of the program.
